A planned town shows its dirt

Most of DuPont is Northwest Landing, a planned community that started going up in the 1990s. Hoffman Hill, Yehle Park, Palisade, Edmond Village. The houses share colors and fence styles, so the one with a green north wall stands out.

We'd rather you call before the owners association writes. A soft wash every year or two keeps algae from setting in.

The Historic Village is different

Those are the old company houses from the powder works days. Old paint wants a light touch, so it's soft washing only. No exceptions.

Moving out?

DuPont shares a fence line with Joint Base Lewis-McChord, and people here move a lot. A clean house and driveway help when you're listing or handing the place back. Military members get 10% off.

Dynamite built this town

1833
The Hudson's Bay Company sets up Fort Nisqually here, a fur trading post.
1909
The DuPont company finishes an explosives plant on the old fort site and builds 58 houses for its workers.
1975
The plant shuts down. Its dynamite had gone into the Grand Coulee Dam and the Panama Canal.

The worker houses are still standing. That's the Historic Village, on the National Register since 1987. After the plant closed, Weyerhaeuser bought the land and planned the rest of the town around it. The golf course sits where the plant was.

A favorite DuPont fact of ours: on July 5, 1841, the Wilkes expedition held an Independence Day party here. It's counted as the first one west of the Mississippi. The town has been tidy and proud ever since, and we like helping it stay that way.

Same-age town, same-age problems

Roofs

Whole streets in Northwest Landing were roofed in the same few years. Moss starts on the north slopes and where the greenbelt firs lean over the back fence. After a soft wash, most roofs stay clear for 12 to 24 months.

Siding

If yours is fiber cement, the manufacturer itself warns that a pressure washer can damage the surface. Vinyl has drain holes that let sprayed water in behind the panels. Both get a soft wash from us.

Gutters

Firs drop needles all year, so a house on the greenbelt needs its gutters checked in spring as well as fall. We clear them and flush the downspouts.

Driveways and sidewalks

Concrete in the shade goes green and slick by spring. We clean it with a surface cleaner, so there are no wand stripes. Once a year does it for most homes.

Fences and decks

Cedar goes grey, then green. High pressure leaves wood fuzzy and striped, so we clean it at a pressure the boards can take. Composite decking gets its own setting.

Windows

Inside and out, all year. Worth doing after a house wash, when the siding is clean and the glass is suddenly the dirty part.
